As business executives in industry, frustrated for years by the inability as business decision makers to either get the right data together or the time spent repeatedly waiting (and business value lost) to create just the right report and analysis of that data in a time relevant manner, we embarked on a mission.  

We asked ourselves, why is this so hard to do?

Several things confounded us:

  • the amount of time and resources wasted repeatedly defining sources, targets, transformations, analytical and reporting, ad hoc and query requirements
  • the disconnect between IT and business users about how business requirements should be technically rendered
  • business misconceptions about the operational and strategic value of their data and information
  • the static, tightly defined, arcane, "query" language detailing how IT technically will provision those reports
  • the trade off between costly ad-hoc query analysis enabling access to all measures and dimensions of analysis and the static, highly structured definition of reporting cubes providing access to only those predefined analysis that had been anticipated
  • the challenge, complexity and cycle time for the business intelligence industry's subsequent need to anticipate the "what-if", "what-about" drill down queries and reporting measures and dimensions before hard coding the structure to provision this type of analysis
  • the lost business value incurred by thinking through how you want to analyze a specific situation, then waiting in time, hours, days, weeks for reports to be created by our BI "center of competency." Waiting so long, the results of the report when created are no longer time relevant to the decision that needed to be made.  Worse, you stop asking for more reports.   So much for problem solving spontaneity.
